Hydraulic Simulation of Marine Loading Arm for Training

Overview:

Pressure Dynamics developed a hydraulic simulation of a marine loading arm to support the delivery of a targeted training course for Woodside Energy Group. The objective was to enhance understanding of system functionality by transforming a static hydraulic schematic into an interactive, visual learning tool.

Approach:

The simulation was developed using Automation Studio by Famic Technologies, a platform typically utilised by Pressure Dynamics for hydraulic system design, optimisation and fault-finding.

For this project, the team leveraged the software’s live animation capability to recreate the marine loading arm hydraulic circuit and bring it to life in a dynamic environment. The original schematic was accurately replicated and enhanced to simulate real-time system behaviour.

This enabled the development of supporting training materials, including visual demonstrations and presentation content, designed to improve engagement and knowledge retention.

Key Features

  • Live simulation of hydraulic circuit behaviour
  • Visualisation of valve functions and system interactions
  • Demonstration of cause-and-effect relationships within the system
  • Freewheel function modelling to simulate vessel movement (heave, roll and pitch)
  • Emergency Release System (ERS) activation and response simulation

Outcome:

The completed simulation provides a highly effective training tool, enabling clearer understanding of complex hydraulic systems in both normal and critical operating scenarios.

By making system behaviour more accessible and intuitive, the solution supports improved training outcomes, enhances operator confidence and contributes to safer, more informed operations.

This project highlights Pressure Dynamics’ ability to combine engineering expertise with practical, technology-driven training solutions tailored to client requirements.
